I’ve been tossing it around in my head for a while, but I want to turn this into a food blog. I already post pictures and write about it on here on a near daily basis as it is, so why not? I love food, it love me, there’s only one problem. I need an angle. There are so many amazing London food blogs out there - how to stand out?

Anyhoo, I’ll be giving it a think, but if you have any suggestions, let me know

Cheap things in London: cake, Belgo lobsterfest and shoes

I just admitted to an American friend of mine over the weekend that I often decide if something is worth buying based on the exchange rate between dollar and pound three years ago (about 2 to 1) because that’s when I first started coming to London. Needless to say, this is why I don’t go out that often and have Cheerios sent from home.

I’ve therefore made it part of my every day routine to save a ton of money by cutting corners, not going out to eat too much, and spending sensibly when I do. I seem to have found over the past week some really great deals and fun ideas that I feel would be a travesty not to pass on.

1. Microwave mug cake found at Fun Foods on a Budget

Absolutely brilliant idea. Put a few key cake ingredients into a mug, microwave on high for 3 minutes, and presto(!) poor man’s souffle.

2. Lobsterfest at Belgo

I was recently invited to this delicious taste test of lobster goodness. Belgo, the Belgian restaurant chain has a promotion all through June where you can get a choice of three different lobster mains for under £20 and three different lobster starters for under £8. True, this isn’t exactly in my budget as an every day food stop, but this is about a cheap as it gets for lobster in London. I recommend the Thai Red Curry lobster starter and the surf and turf. Very very tasty!

Side note: I don’t think anything should be called Lobsterfest unless there are Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits in the mix.

Additional side note: I totally remember when Red Lobster introduced those on to the menu to replace those awful KFC-esque ones. It’s one of the happiest memories of my childhood.

Maybe I should have my mom send me some of those instead of Cheerios…

3. Vending machine after-party shoes

High heels. Pretty, but painful. Especially if you have to walk an unexpected amount in a given night (often happens in London). But not to worry, ladies….Now you can buy, in a loo, for a fiver, flat shoes for your aching feet out of a vending machine.

That’s right. Rollasoles and Afterheels are the answers to my prayers. I just wish I’d thought of it first. Damn clever idea.

This is why I love my life here: I helped judge this cupcake contest. The winner was Fair Cake and the cupcakes were amazing. Bloody expensive (£35 for a minimum of 9), but amazing.

Westfield opened up months ago, but for some reason I just couldn’t bring myself to go. I was trying to avoid the American-ness of it for a long time, but today it was nice. Westfield is MASSIVE. It’s not that there are a huge amount of stores, it’s just that the stores are huge and the ceilings tall.

It’s all pretty fancy too. They have a luxury end that looks like this:

Much nicer than Somerset.

I couldn’t really afford to go shopping, but I indulged myself with lime green nail polish I can’t tell if I love or hate and a 50% off dress for £12.50 at Blanco. Not too shabby.

And if that weren’t enough, I’m pretty sure I saw a prostitute!

It was probably only 65 out, but this kid REALLY wanted to play...
